MLS Review: DC United moves closer to playoff spot with win over FC Dallas

DC United vaulted the Montreal Impact into the sixth and final postseason spot on Saturday thanks to a late win over FC Dallas.

A late goal from Rusell Canouse led DC to a 1-0 win while extending the team's unbeaten run to seven consecutive matches. FC Dallas, meanwhile, saw a six-game unbeaten streak snapped, although the club remains atop the Western Conference.

While Wayne Rooney created two of the better looks on the night, the match remained scoreless until Canouse's 86th minute finish. On the end of a Rooney free kick, Canouse hit his initial shot off the crossbar before finishing his second chance, sealing three points for DC at Audi Field.

The win gave DC a one-point lead over the Impact, who have played 32 games to DC's 31. Rooney, Canouse and co. return to action on Wednesday to make up that game in hand as they take on Toronto FC, who will miss the postseason following last week's loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps.

In a match pitting two of the league's worst against one another, it was the Colorado Rapids that came out on top in a 2-0 win over Minnesota United. The Rapids took the lead in the 61st minute through Yannick Boli, and were fortunate to hold onto that lead as Minnesota saw a goal called back in the game's waning moments.

Minutes later, Tommy Smyth added that Rapids' second before prompting a confrontation between the two sides near the Minnesota bench. Smith, Minnesota's Harrison Heath and Minnesota's goalkeeper coach were sent off in the aftermath as the Rapids held on to the clean sheet.

In the day's third and final match, the New England Revolution topped Orlando City in a match of two of the Eastern Conference's struggling sides.

Cristian Penilla scored in the 51st minute before assisting a Diego Fagundez goal just four minutes later. The win wasn't enough to keep the Revs in the playoff hunt, though, as they are eliminated from postseason contention.
