So it goes without saying that Los Angeles Galaxy winger David Beckham knows a thing or two about soccer derbies.
“If you play in these games and witness these kinds of atmospheres, a full house at the stadium, it doesn’t really get much better than that,” said Beckham after training this week. “I think the win we got against Barcelona at the Bernabeu with Real Madrid was a special one. When you play in games like that and you win these games, it’s so so important.”
Not all games are like these says Beckham, and he expects the City of Angels clash between the Galaxy and Chivas this weekend to be something really special.
“Each game is different. Like I said, when you play in these games, they are always really intense. Lots of emotion. It’s great to have that, as that is what soccer is all about. The emotion. I wish every game was like that.”
Going into the match, the Galaxy have the edge in the series, having won nine of 17, while Chivas only has three victories. The standings in the Western Conference are very LA-based as well given that the Galaxy sit in second, five points behind Houston, while Chivas are only two back of their crosstown rivals.
Beckham hopes his experience, the team’s current form and the importance of the match ahead will be enough to propel the Galaxy to victory.
“I’ve been lucky enough to be on the winning side in Manchester and with Real Madrid as well,” said Beckham of his past experiences in derby matches. “I hope it continues here. I hope we go into it as confident as we were in the other games and we beat them. It’s important that we play well and work hard, you can’t ask for much more than that.”
