With Monterrey and Morelia both on torrid streaks and America looking strong, Puebla had not choice but to take care of business against a lowly Atlas side at home.
That's precisely what Puebla did as la Franja beat los Zorros 1-0 in Estadio Cuauhtemoc.
Joaquin Velazquez scored the only goal of the game in the 77th minute when he knocked in a cross from Luis Miguel Noriega.
Morelia and Monterrey each won, and Morelia now have 31 points and lead Monterrey by two. Puebla moved into a temporary draw with America on 26 points. America play Pumas on Thursday.
Queretaro 1, Tigres 0
Queretaro were not faring well in league after gaining promotion, but once the club got a taste of top-flight football, things started going well for Gallos Blancos.
Mauro Vila scored his second match-winner in the last three games as Queretaro toppled Tigres at Estadio Corregidora.
For Queretaro, the win was their fourth in the last five games. Queretaro had two draws and eight losses in their first 10 games of the season.
Vila scored on a stellar goal. Isaac Romo grazed a long ball with the top of his head, and the ball bounced to Vila, who stood outside the penalty area. With his back to the goal, Vila trapped it with his chest, headed the ball to his left, turned and fired a shot on goal. The ball sailed over Cirilo Saucedo's head and into the back of the net.
