While Antonio De Nigris last played for Monterrey six years ago, the club and player remained close and intertwined.

Following his death on Sunday, reportedly of congestive heart failure, Monterrey club officials are adamant in helping out the fallen player's loved ones.

"Right now, everyone is focused on helping and supporting the family," club president Luis Miguel Salvador said in a press conference. "That is the main priority and once everything is figured out we will respect whatever they plan. Now, the first and most important thing is to make sure his family in Greece is taken care of."

Antonio De Nigris' younger brother Aldo plays for Monterrey and said the club remained a favorite of Antonio's.

The elder De Nigris came up through Monterrey's ranks and made his professional debut with los Rayados in 2000. Even six years after his exit, Salvador said the player's death was something the club would rally around as los Rayados will play America in the Liguilla quarterfinals on Saturday.

"This is motivating for the entire club, to pull the result out," he said.

While reports surfaced of De Nigris' heart condition - something Aldo De Nigris said his family as aware of - Salvador said he was unaware of anything hampering De Nigris.

"We never knew anything," Salvador said. "He left Monterrey in January of 2003 and he never showed anything. I'm surprised about what happened on Sunday."

Salvador said he was also concerned about possible rumors surfacing regarding De Nigris condition and passing.

"It's strange that something comes out now and not a year ago or two. He was in Turkey some time and nothing was ever said," he said. "Now is not the time to speculate and make statements regarding it. Let's wait until the official results are known."
