The Catalan giants have been linked with the Arsenal captain ever since he left in 2003, but after failing to tempt the Gunners to sell their captain this year he could return in 12 months time.
While that would suit the candidates in Barca's presidential election, which will be held in 2010 when Laporta stands down, the club may make a move to land the player early.
Laporta wants to leave a legacy when he steps down next summer and re-signing Fabregas would give him just that and Sport believe that he could seek to make a move around Christmas.
Arsenal might only consider letting their talismanic midfielder go should they make an early exit from the Champions League and that is what Barca are hoping for, the report continues.
After taking over as president six years ago, Laporta was infuriated to find that in the interim period Arsenal had signed Fabregas and vowed to buy him back before he left office.
The club's technical secretary, Txiki Begiristain, has had a different view, according to reports, as he felt that Barca should not spend millions on a player that walked out on them.
