Aresenal dominated their opponents throughout the contest, overwhelming Ronald Koeman's side with a slick passing game that the Dutch champions simply could not live with.
Wenger was delighted with his team's display, and now believes that have players have the maturity required to compete for major silverware come the end of the season.
He told Sky Sports: "I believe they [AZ] were organized to defend and we were organized to attack.
"Overall, we switched off a bit and got caught on the break at 4-0, but I am very happy with our game.
"You just want to go from strength to strength and I believe the team looks more mature, patient when needed and serious when we don't have the ball.
"We want to show (something special is brewing here). Let's keep this attitude and this spirit, and we can deliver something special."
Standard Liege's victory over Olympiakos denied the Gunners the chance to qualify with two games to spare.
Wenger added: "I believe it is not a bad result as it means if we beat Standard Liege or get a point then we can finish first in the group."
