Olympique Lyon 5-5 Marseille: OM And OL Share Ten Goals In All-Time Classic

Olympique Lyonnais and Marseille shared a classic ten-goal draw at the Gerland on Sunday evening in a match that did not let up for a second.

With four goals on the boards by the interval, things grew more frenetic from there, with five in the final eleven minutes setting up an incredible finale that saw the points shared.

The hosts took the lead after just three minutes, Miralem Pjanic half-volleying home a Kim Kallstrom cross with force that 'keeper Steve Mandanda couldn't quite deal with.

But less than ten minutes had elapsed before Marseille were on level terms, Souleymane Diawara's brilliant header from Fabrice Abriel's corner sneaking in off Hugo Lloris' hand.

Sidney Govou then rolled back the years with a sweet finish against the onrushing Mandanda after a brilliant run and pass from Lisandro Lopez.

Marseille thought they'd equalized right afterwards, only for the linesman's flag to go up against Govou after he'd put Lisandro through to place the ball into the net.

In fact they did level matters just before the break, the OL defence standing off Benoit Cheyrou and allowing the midfielder to launch a 25-yarder past Lloris.

Parity was not to last, as just after the break Abriel feinted past Lamine Gassama before crossing for Bakari Kone to give Marseille their first lead of the encounter.

Then followed a thirty minute spell without a goal before Brandao must have thought that he'd settled matters for the visitors with a volley after Abriel's corner.

But two minutes later Lisandro Lopez made it 3-4 after great play from Jean-Il Makoun, before just two minutes Lisandro then converted a penalty to equalize after Gabriel Heinze handled a Jeremy Toulalan corner.

In the 90th minute this spectacular match appeared to have been settled as Michel Bastos combined with Lisandro and Bafetemi Gomis to net Lyon's fifth goal of the evening.

But two minutes into stoppage time, Laurent Bonnart's speculative ball forward found a goalmouth scramble. Mamadou Niang's shot was parried off the line by Hugo Lloris, but in an attempt to clear Jeremy Toulalan fired the ball into his own net.

It was a cruel end for Lyon, but given that their fightback was so sudden, Marseille will feel that they too deserved at least a point. For serving up such an incredible match, few neutrals will grudge both sides taking something from one of the most memorable matches of 2009.

Elsewhere...

In the evening's other two games, Bordeaux suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Lille, while Toulouse edged past Rennes by the odd goal in five.

In the north, Lille were up against it in the early stages, but a fine strike from Yohan Cabaye and a Florent Belmont penalty gave LOSC a welcome win over the Girondins.

Meanwhile in the Pink City TFC went 3-1 ahead thanks to Moussa Sissoko, Daniel Braaten and an Andre-Pierre Gignac strike - only his third in twelve Ligue 1 games - before Kader Mangane added to Asamoah Gyan's effort from just before the break.
