Inter midfielder Patrick Vieira has defended his own performance in the 1-1 draw with Roma on Sunday.

The veteran was subbed out after 45 minutes, but explained that it did not have to do with his showing or his elbow on Daniele De Rossi.

"During the first-half the match was very tight. If [Diego] Milito had immediately found an equaliser it would have changed everything," the former Arsenal star told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"After the interval, [coach Jose] Mourinho wanted to use more offensive players than myself. I do not consider this a failure on my part, just a question of tactics. I think it was a good point."

Vieira was recently excluded from the France squad for the crucial World Cup play-off matches against Ireland.

He has been rotated in and out of the starting XI this season for the Nerazzurri.
