New Palermo coach Delio Rossi is eager to steer the club in the right direction.
Rossi replaced sacked Walter Zenga on Monday. The plan is to resurrect the club's fortunes and bring positive results to the Renzo Barbera. The former Lazio tactician knows his task is demanding, but he believes hard work will allow them to climb the table.
"I am here to think about the team and do my work. As for the rest, the decisions are down to [president Maurizio] Zamparini," Rossi told the press.
"The team? We are talking about a good squad and I have to evaluate them by seeing them work."
Former coach Zenga once said Palermo were good enough to win Serie A, but Rossi was a little more modest in his assessment.
"Honestly they are an ideal team to become an important player in the league, but it's the pitch that will decide what we can achieve," added the coach.
"The pitch is the last judge. First we have to do things and work, then we can speak about what this team can do. We have to work and then we will analyse where we are."
Rossi then took a moment to reflect on the departure of his forerunner.
"My thoughts are with Zenga, I know the sack can be hurtful. He is a professional, and my thoughts are with my predecessor," continued Rossi.
The coach then revealed his appointment was a hasty one.
"I was contacted by the club on Sunday night, not before this, though I read in the papers that I was linked to the club before that.
"This is an important club that wants to grow, and it will be a challenge for me. I had a contact with ten or 12 teams, but I felt the passion and hunger here."
Zamparini added his voice, and, true to form, he said little.
"I will not answer any questions on Zenga" concluded the chief.
