Arsene Wenger has admitted that he supported Real Madrid as a child and only the ambition to make his current Arsenal team successful stopped him from being tempted to join them in the summer.

The Frenchman was reported to be tracked by the Spanish giants to become their coach on a number of occasions in recent season, with an approach during this past summer being put forward, too.

Despite his attraction to the team he followed as a boy, Wenger is keen to see his latest Gunners' outfit end the club's run of five seasons without a trophy.

"I have a great respect for Real Madrid, they are the club of my childhood," he told News of the World. "But I am involved in a project at Arsenal.

"We have developed our style. There is a close bond with the players. That creates a responsibility.

"I predict the fulfillment of a dream this season. We have not won a title for four years now, but in those four years we have come very close, again and again, to winning the English Premier League and even the Champions League.

"I think the team is now reaching maturity. And a team performance can create something magical. If that works and the entire team is electrified, it's fantastic."
