Australian Matthew Breeze has been appointed to referee
Saturday’s AFC Champions League final between Saudi Arabian champions Al
Ittihad and K-League giants Pohang Steelers in Tokyo.
Australians Matthew Cream and Ben Wilson will be the assistant referees, while compatriot Peter Green will be the fourth official at the National Stadium.
A FIFA referee since 2001, Breeze has officiated at the past two FIFA Confederations Cups in Germany and South Africa, and has refereed the third-place playoff each time.
The 37-year-old was also one of two Australian referees at the 2007 AFC Asian Cup.
Breeze, a police officer, was a referee in Australia’s former National Soccer League and has officiated in the A-League since its inception in 2005.
He took charge at this year’s A-League Grand Final between Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United, who will both compete in next year’s AFC Champions League.
