The Swedish youngster initially appeared to be on his way to Dutch powerhouse PSV, but the transfer collapsed when the Eindhoven side refused to meet Bengtsson's financial demands.
Then Lazio stepped up to sign the 23-year-old before Eredivisie champions AZ appear to have convinced Bengtsson to join them in a last-ditch attempt.
However, on Tuesday a report emerged that the defender had decided to join Lazio after all. German newspaper BZ now claims that Bengtsson will join Hertha BSC.
The Swede has reportedly completed a medical and will be presented to the press later on Thursday. Official confirmation of the deal has yet to be announced.
