Ambitious Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim have received some disturbing news from the treatment table in the aftermath of their 1-0 league victory against Freiburg on Sunday.

Austrian defender Andreas Ibertsberger sustained a serious facial injury when challenging for a header with Freiburg's Ivica Banovic in the 90th minute of the match.

The highly-rated defender broke his cheekbone, eye socket and maxillary sinus, so the first half of the season appears to be over for him.

The 27-year-old was operated on in Heidelberg on Monday by Professor Plinkert.

"We put in some osteosynthetic material to stabilise the fractures and we'll be monitoring his progress very closely over the next few days and weeks," Dr. Pieter Beks told Hoffenheim's official website. "At the moment, it would be right to assume that 'Andi' will not be available until after the winter break."
