Fulham manager Roy Hodgson has revealed that Damien Duff will miss the club’s Europa League trip to Roma on Thursday but should be fit for the Republic of Ireland’s forthcoming World Cup play-off with France.

The midfielder had to be substituted in yesterday’s 3-1 win over Liverpool at Craven Cottage and has no chance of featuring in the Stadio Olimpico.

"It's an injury he has been struggling with for a while," Hodgson told BBC Sport.

"It stems from his Achilles, although it's a little bit more complicated than that.

"There is no way I would even consider him for Roma."

Whilst the news is likely to be a blow to the Cottagers, Hodgson was quick to reveal that Republic of Ireland fans should not be downhearted as he was hopeful of a quick recovery.

"I will ask the medical staff to take as long as they need to try to get him back into shape as quickly as they can," he added.

"And if he's fit for next Sunday then there's no reason why he shouldn't play for the Republic."

Fulham take on Wigan Athletic next Sunday with the Republic of Ireland scheduled to face France the following Saturday.
