MANCHESTER UNITED
Ben Foster - 6 - Watching the ball deflect past his reach wasn't on the menu for the struggling substitute. Didn't let this effect him and dealt comfortably, and confidently, with everything else
Gary Neville - 5 - Solid defensively but failed to serve up any quality when asked to cross.
Nemanja Vidic - 6 - Comfortable evening for the Serb as Besiktas chose not to push forward with any frequency.
Wes Brown - 5 - Turned too easily in the build up to Fink striking the post, but showcased his no-nonsense technique, otherwise.
Rafael Da Silva - 6 - Unlucky to see Tello's pot-shot bounce off him for the opener. Was his usual effervescent self going forward even though he was picked on the left flank. Removed for Evra.
Gabriel Obertan - 8 - Earned top marks in Ferguson's kindergarten. Was capable of playing with flair and caused confusion. Knocked in a number of probing crosses, and was on the same wavelength as his team-mates throughout.
Darron Gibson - 5 - Struggled to make his mark and his passing went askew too often when put under pressure. Failed to find the target with his sledgehammer of a right boot. Disappointing night was capped off when hooked for Carrick.
Anderson - 4 - Simply never at the races. Undid the good work of Stamford Bridge with an ineffective display.
Ji-Sung Park - 6 - Decent return for the Korean after a long injury absence. Linked well with Rafael and forced a fumble from Rustu in the first half. Substituted for Owen when United went on the hunt for goals.
Federico Macheda - 6 - Tried, but seemed to lack the confidence to let loose unlike Welbeck. Didn't reach the high watermark of last season, but looks ready for more first-team appearances.
Danny Welbeck - 7 - Bright spark up top and asked several questions of the Turks' back line. Fired in a number of shots, but will regret not troubling the scorers.
SUBSTITUTES
Patrice Evra - 7 - Added a new dimension to the United attack. Went down too easily when he charged into the box, though.
Michael Owen - 4 - Touched the ball on a handful of occasions. Never looked like becoming the saviour.
Michael Carrick - 5 - Sloppy appearance. Passed to nobody and shot in to the stands.
BESIKTAS
Rustu Recber - 9 - Kept busy by the home attack and performed exceptionally when called upon. Used his experience to rally the defence in front of him. Saved superbly at the end from Brown and Macheda. Booked for time-wasting.
Ibrahim Kas - 6 - Put in the kind of solid shift you'd expect from a Turkish international. Stuck to his task of marking Park and rarely ventured into opposition territory.
Matteo Ferrari - 7 - Stood up to the test posed by Welbeck and Macheda. Kept his composure and wasn't flustered when the ball came his way.
Ibrahim Toraman - 7 - Typified Besiktas' defiance as he slid through the back of Welbeck. Combined well with Ferrari to keep United out. Taken off after a collision with Obertan.
Ibrahim Uzulmez - 5 - Twisted left and right by Obertan and wasn't able to clamp down on him with any regularity.
Michael Fink - 7 - Will relive the moment he struck the post for a long time. Was unlucky to see his endeavour go without proper recompense. Formed a solid wall with Ernst in the middle.
Fabian Ernst - 7 - No nonsense play from the veteran German. Put the pinch on Gibson and Anderson, covering every blade of grass in the process.
Ekrem Dag - 6 - Looked tricky at times as he put Rafael on the back foot.
Rodrigo Alvaro Tello - 7 - To win the lottery you must buy a ticket and his goal came from that maxim. Final noteworthy moment was the enthusiastic celebration that followed. Subbed after a tough tackle from Rafael.
Ismail Koybasi - 5 - His selection was designed to add ballast to the left flank, but that would have backfired if Neville had crossed with any precision.
Bobo - 5 - Didn't fancy the rigour of being the lone striker and contributed little. Hooked for Karadeniz.
SUBSTITUTES
Batuhan Karadeniz - 5 - Youthful exuberance got the better of him as he was booked seconds after coming on.
Ugur Inceman - N/A
Erhan Guven - 7 - Made you forget Toraman was off the pitch as he filled in with ease.
