Olympique de Marseille head coach Didier Deschamps has revealed his frustration at only securing a 1-1 draw against Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

The French club made a slow start to the game and fell behind when Marco Borriello pounced on an error to beat Gabriel Heinze and score the opening goal of the match. Les Phoceens rebounded quickly, with Mamadou Niang’s strong run and cross from the left acting as the catalyst for Lucho Gonzalez to thump high into the net.

There were chances for OM to win the game in the second half, most notably through Brandao, who sent a simple chance against the top of the crossbar, and Souleymane Diawara, who thumped a powerful header onto the inside of Milan’s post with just seconds remaining.

“I regret [the result] because there was room for us to win this game,” Deschamps explained to TF1 in the aftermath of the encounter. “We had some bad luck hitting the post and the bar. It was a good game, the players really went for it and made their opponents suffer.

“We had opportunities, but we were poorly conducted in the first period. In the second half, Milan ran a little more, which is normal because they were playing at home. We were more than equal, we only lacked the result.”

If OM are to progress to the last 16 of the competition, they will have to register a massive win against Real Madrid, or defeat los Blancos and hope Milan again succumb to FC Zurich.

Meanwhile, Marseille’s fixture against Sochaux, previously scheduled for December 2, has been postponed to allow the club time to prepare for their final Champions League fixture against Real Madrid.
