In a topsy-turvy career that has been riddled with brilliant play and petulant outbursts, Real Madrid midfielder Guti may have another chance to prove himself for his country, as Spain coach Vicente del Bosque's second in command, Toni Grande, has hinted that the player could feature for the national team.

In a report released by Marca, Grande is quoted as saying that "it is in no way impossible that Guti would be in the squad for South Africa." The ex-Madrid youth team coach is very familiar with the Blanco midfielder and praised Guti for his display against Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday in which he capped his performance with a brilliant no-look backheel in front of goal, leaving the ball for the oncoming Karim Benzema to drive home.

"We are talking of a player who I have known very well since he was a kid," said Grande. "We will not close the door to anyone, especially a player with his characteristics."

Despite Grande's comments, the Spanish national team remains a very competitive squad that has an established group of core players. Particularly congested is the midfield as Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas, Xabi Alonso, David Silva, and Marcos Senna (among others) compete for limited places in the squad.
