Rangers full-back Kirk Broadfoot, 24, formerly of St Mirren, required hospital treatment after a scalding-hot egg exploded in his face.

The Scottish international, who has three full caps, was studying a couple of eggs that he had been poaching in the microwave, when one exploded and left Broadfoot hot-footing for the first aid bag, as the blisteringly hot water caused considerable discomfort.

"It may sound funny but it was quite a serious accident. Kirk's face was quite badly burned," one club insider revealed to the Daily Record.

Broadfoot immediately rang his parents, who helped the player to hospital where he was treated for scalds to his cheek. But the injury could have been far worse, the source claimed.

"As it happens, it was a close shave. He was very close to burning his eye, which could have had a serious impact on his career."

Broadfoot refused to comment on the injury, but he is expected to make a full recovery.
