The 37-year-old had been in the market for a new club ever since he left Feyenoord on a free transfer last summer. The Rotterdam powerhouse opted to part company with Timmer in order to hand promising youngster Darley Torres the chance to prove his worth.
"I've made the decision to end my active career. No more football for me. I've had several others in the past months, but nothing interesting came up," Timmer said on Dutch TV show Pauw & Witteman.
Timmer started his professional career at Zwolle in 1990 and also played at AZ and Ajax before joining Feyenoord in the summer of 2006. He has made well over 500 league appearances throughout his career.
Additionally, the shot stopper made seven international appearances for the Oranje.
