Bent has struggled to hold a first team place at Tottenham this season, with both Martin Jol and Juande Ramos preferring to start with Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov.

The newspaper’s rumours section states that Dennis Wise, Newcastle executive in charge of football, could be about to finalise a deal with the London club.

Bent was mooted to join Newcastle five years ago, when he was at Ipswich Town but the Toon decided to take Darren Ambrose instead.

The signing would supplement Kevin Keegan’s already potent strike-force as well as offering Bent the guarantee of first team football - something he lacks at White Hart Lane.
