The Egypt international has been on-loan from El Zamalek for the duration of the season and, during his first few months in England, managed to impress manager Steve Bruce.
Recently, though, the striker has been more of a hindrance to Bruce than a help, as his lifestyle came under close scrutiny when he failed to return to training from international duty.
The player was then seen partying into the early hours in Egypt and then again upon his return to Manchester.
This led Bruce to say the Egyptian striker would never play for the club again, but Zaki was forgiven and given another chance to prove his worth.
Now, though, his season has been wrecked by a knee injury, meaning he will miss the rest of the Latics season.
The striker had to be taken off during the club's 3-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion this afternoon and Bruce fears the injury will keep him out for some time.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Bruce said, "Zaki looks to have picked up a very serious knee injury.
"We will know more once the x-rays and scans have taken place but it doesn`t look promising."
Zaki now seems set to return to his parent club on June 6, when his deal at the JJB Stadium expires.
