Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes he has found Francesc Fabregas' ideal central midfield partner, Wolfsburg's Christian Gentner, according to various claims in Germany as initially reported by Sport.

Wenger failed to replace three influential midfielders last summer when World Cup winner Gilberto departed, along with Mathieu Flamini and Lassana Diarra.

Since then burgeoning midfielder Denilson has attempted to step-up to regular first team duty, but to mixed results.

Wenger is allegedly looking to bolster his midfield zone with the acquisition of Gentner, a 23-year-old defensive-minded midfielder who quietly and efficiently goes about his business.

Gentner apparently came to the attention of Arsenal first-team coach Boro Primorac while keeping tabs on Wolfsburg forward Edin Dzeko.

Gentner has operated in midfield for Wolfsburg since 2007. He had a crucial part in the club's claim for the Bundesliga title and, since his arrival, he has featured 50 times, scoring seven goals. He has only recently been rewarded with a call-up to the German national side.

Arsenal have also been linked with England international Gareth Barry.
