Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent has been heavily linked with a move to Sunderland in recent days, as the White Hart Lane club edge closer to a deal to bring England striker Peter Crouch to north London from Portsmouth.

That deal for Bent has seemingly moved a significant step closer today, as Sky Sports News is reporting that the player has been compelled to leave the plane taking the Spurs squad to China for the pre-season Asia Trophy competition. The abrupt decision was due to a phone call that was received in relation to the move.

Jermaine Jenas, consistently linked with a move to Aston Villa from Tottenham in recent weeks, was on board the plane, giving some credence to manager Harry Redknapp's assertions over the weekend that he wanted the midfielder to stay at Spurs.

Crouch, though, a deal for whom is reported to be moving ever closer, was not with the party on board the plane to Beijing.
