Coventry City have successfully signed former Portsmouth defender Martin Cranie for an undisclosed fee.

The Sky Blues had lined up a move for the player earlier this month as they looked to expand their defensive options in the wake of some departures.

Cranie has been owned by Pompey for the past two years but has spent most of his time on loan to Championship sides, so the 22-year-old is well aware of what lies in store for him this season.

"It feels great to be here to be honest and hopefully now I am here I can impress," Sky Sports quote Cranie as saying.

"I've been out on loan in the Championship before so I know what this league is all about. It's a bit more physical and frantic than the Premier League but it's still an exciting league to be in and hopefully I can help Coventry push towards promotion."

Coventry boss Chris Coleman is over the moon with the acquisition of his new flexible asset, with the Welsh gaffer hoping to put Cranie to good use in the new season.

"Martin's a player we've liked for some time, he's young and he's got it all ahead of him. He's proven himself at England Under-21 level so he has the kind of quality we want to bring here and I'm very much looking forward to working with him," said Coleman.
