Roy Hodgson's latest recruit at Fulham, Damien Duff, signed for an undisclosed fee earlier in the week, thinks the situation Newcastle United find themselves in is "sad", and believes it was best for him - and his former club - to move on.

"It's been a tough three years there," Duff stated at a press conference today. "It's unfortunate and sad how it turned out, it's hard to take, but it was best for both parties for me to move on."

The 30-year-old, who has worn the colours of a west London club before - he was one of Chelsea's first signings in the Roman Abramovich era - also enhanced the speculation that Magpies owner Mike Ashley would be selling the club, with crowd favourite Alan Shearer brought in to boss the side on a permanent basis.

"There's whispers that Mike Ashley may be selling the club and that a local businessman will be bringing in Alan Shearer, but it's going to be a long season so we'll see what happens," he revealed.

Fulham face Russian Premier League outfit Amkar Perm in a play-off fixture of the Europa League on Thursday evening.
