Tottenham Hotspur have become the first London club to put forward their stadium as a venue to host games if England's 2018 World Cup bid is successful.

Spurs' 56,000 capacity stadium, scheduled to open in 2012, is expected to be joined by Wembley, Arsenal's Emirates Stadium and the 2012 Olympic Stadium as the capital's stadia for the World Cup.

London United, a body organised to determine which of the capital's grounds would form part of the FA's bid for the World Cup, are confident that the other stadiums will sign up by Wednesday evening ahead of a formal submission to the FA on Thursday.

Spurs' new, as yet unnamed, stadium will feature a large single-tier stand and is designed to bring fans closer to the pitch than other modern stadia, with club chairman Daniel Levy declaring that it will be “the most fan-friendly stadium in Europe” when plans were unveiled in October.
