Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez hailed his side's defensive display, as the Reds escaped from Goodison Park with all three points.
A 2-0 win continued their fine record away to Everton, and Benitez said he hoped the derby win would be a catalyst for the rest of the season.
"We needed to win," the Spaniard told BBC Sport.
"When you are not winning, you need a big game, and then everything can change.
"It was a great victory - everybody is really pleased. Today we worked so hard - they were tough and pushing and we did our job in defence and we had to play counter-attack."
Striker Dirk Kuyt grabbed the second goal and was equally happy with the points.
"We were under pressure but the main thing is we showed character," he said.
"I'm really happy."
