Key Fixtures:
Benfica 0-1 V. Guimaraes
In the shock result of the round, Benfica suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of a resilient Guimaraes side at the Estadio da Luz. The Lisbon giants fielded a near full-strength side and began the game strongly, with Guimaraes goalkeeper Nilson called into action several times in the first half.
However, it was the visiting side who took the lead, with Gustavo Lazzaretti towering above the Benfica defence and nodding home a Desmarets corner in the 25th minute.
As Benfica pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Guimaraes almost doubled their lead, with Tiago Targino beating David Luiz on the right wing, only for Nuno Assis to nod his cross into the arms of Moreira.
In the second half, Benfica reacted by bringing on Weldon and Nuno Gomes, going all out in attack in an attempt to turn the result around. However, the Lisbon side looked off-colour, with Di Maria in particular posting a below-par performance.
O Glorioso should have forced extra time in the 89th minute, when Weldon lost his marker and found a free header from eight yards out. The striker could only nod wide, and Guimaraes held out for a famous victory.
GD Pescadores 1-4 Sporting
At the Estadio do Restelo, Sporting Lisbon sealed a 4-1 victory over lower league GD Pescadores, with Carlos Carvalhal beginning his tenure at the Lisbon club victoriously.
However, Os Leoes continued to display frailty and a lack of confidence. Indeed, they found themselves going into half-time losing 1-0, as Pescadores opened the scoring following a fine long shot from Toze.
As Sporting fans began to fear yet another dismal result, the Lisbon giants came out in force in the second half, with Miguel Veloso levelling the score from a fine free-kick just after half-time.
Sporting took the lead five minutes later, with Moutinho converting from the penalty spot after Liedson was brought down in the area.
Miguel Veloso made sure of the result in the 63rd minute, scoring with a placed strike from distance, whilst Liedson added gloss to the scoreline in the 69th minute with a cool finish from a Vukcevic assist.
Despite the generous result, Carvalhal has much work ahead if he wants to salvage Sporting's season.
Sp. Braga 3-0 V. Setubal
Sporting Braga carried their fine league form into this potentially tough tie, with Os Arsenalistas winning with a convincing 3-0 victory over Setubal.
The visitors set out their stall at the Estadio Axa from the onset, clearly seeking to frustrate Braga, who struggled to create chances in the opening half-hour.
The home-side broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 36th minute, with Meyong converting from 12-yards after Algerian defender Zarabi needlessly brought down Mossoro in the area.
Braga doubled their lead in the second half, with Mossoro once again involved in the proceedings, striking fabulously from distance and giving goalkeeper Mario Felgueiras no chance.
Moises finalised the scoring in the 76th minute, scoring with an unmarked header from a corner, giving Braga a well deserved victory.
