Cech defends ability to adapt to Emery's style at Arsenal

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has defended his ability to adapt to Unai Emery's playing style.

The 36-year-old has played in every one of the club's four Premier League games thus far this season, despite the signing of Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen.

He conceded five goals in his first two games as the Gunners lost to Manchester City and Chelsea, and also turned in a nervous display with the ball at his feet against Cardiff City, even passing the ball to Harry Arter on the edge of the penalty area, while also nearly scoring an own goal against the champions

Emery is keen to instill a style that sees his team pass out from defence, something Cech has rarely been asked to do during his career to date.

But the former Chelsea goalkeeper has defended himself, insisting that he has the required attributes to continue as the club's No.1.

“I had 166 passes in the first four games which is a huge amount and everybody picked up on only two," he said, per the London Evening Standard .

“It’s obviously not a great thing to do when you pass the ball in a dangerous area, like I did at Cardiff when I gave it to Harry Arter but it’s part of the game that you can always make a mistake.”

Despite their two defeats to kick off the season, Arsenal have won their previous two outings, and Cech is confident that the Gunners will have success under the former PSG boss.

“If you look at the evolution of Barcelona and Man City, it didn’t happen overnight. As they got more familiar with that [style], the results came," he added.

“We’re now in that process of getting to know what advantage it gives us.”

Emery's side are back in action after the international break on Saturday as they travel to Newcastle with the aim of securing a third straight win.
