NFL legend Randy Moss caused a bit of a stir Friday when he apparently signed a deal to play with the Charlotte Independence of the second-division USL.
Moss, who retired after the 2012 season following a 14-year NFL career, looked to be set to trade his wide receiver gloves for those of a goalkeeper, as he took part in a video showing him putting on the Independence shirt, complete with No.84, his old number with the Minnesota Vikings.
MLS Talking Points: TFC ready for homecoming
“Renewing my career is something that I’ve thought about for a long time now,” Moss said. “I’m excited to get started with the Charlotte Independence and show the world that I can be a two-sport athlete.”
He stressed the move was real, with him even being introduced to the team, which opens its season Saturday, April 1. However, if it seemed like an April Fools joke run a day early, that’s because it was. The first letter of each sentence in the story literally spelled out “April Fools.”
So those hoping to see what one of America’s best athletes could do if he played soccer will be left wondering what could have been. Or they can console themselves by watching this old video of Moss playing soccer.
