Bafana Bafana: Eight leading candidates for the hot seat

Bafana Bafana's issues run deeper than just the national team coach and it's arguable that a restructure, especially of the development ranks, is needed.
Therefore it would not make sense for Safa to look overseas for a coach who is not too familiar with the South African football environment. And in any case, Safa made it clear with the appointment of Ntseki, that they are not up for spending huge amounts on a salary. Which is fair enough - that money should rather be put towards development.

At this time, with World Cup qualifiers just around the corner in two months time, it would be best to go for someone who can hit the ground running. Goal takes a look at some of the candidates who could potentially do that.

Not the time for major change

The problem would be to prise McCarthy away from AmaZulu, unless, as former probational team coach Clive Barker suggested, Safa could come to an agreement with Usuthu to allow McCarthy to fill both roles, for the short term at least, and take things from there, depending how the World Cup qualifiers go. Benni does not have that much experience as a PSL coach, but has the profile and the personality to lead the nation.

The great thing about Tinkler is that he should be ready to take up the position immediately as he has not been employed since leaving Maritzburg United last year. Tinkler's calm temperament and motivational skills could be what Bafana need right now, and he certainly worked some magic at Maritzburg last season to help them escape relegation. 
 
He also has great experience on the continent, having been part of the Orlando Pirates technical team which went to the finals of the Caf Confederation Cup and the Champions League.

Since his last stint as national team coach, Mosimane's reputation has increased markedly and he's now seen as one of Africa' best coaches, having added a second Caf Champions League title to his name recently with Al Ahly. The issue though is Mosimane's own ambitions - he's currently conquering Africa and may have his eye on Europe - coaching Bafana could be a backward step for him at this point of his career.

Mashaba did reasonably well in his last stint as Bafana coach, and has one of the best average-points-per-game records of all the senior national team coaches. There is a feeling among some that he was unfairly dismissed from the Bafana Bafana hot-seat five years ago and should have been given more support and more time.

Shakes Mashaba

Komphela previously worked as an interim coach for the national team. He has the stature for the job and can handle the pressure, as he had to during his time in charge of Kaizer Chiefs. The former Bafana Bafana central defender's coaching CV, however, lacks silverware and this could count against him, as could his failure to win anything with Chiefs.

Igesund seems to have been around forever and has been out of the game for some time, at least in terms of the professional ranks - he's currently running an academy in Cape Town.. He's still only 64 though, and has a wealth of experience, including having won the PSL league title four times as a coach. He knows the players, he knows the environment as a former Bafana coach and is the kind of motivational mentor South Africa probably need right now.



Gordon Igesund

Ertugral could potentially be a dark horse for the position. He’s not currently employed as a coach, and the Turkey-born tactician has a massive amount of experience in the PSL and is renowned for developing exciting young talent.

Queiroz would fit the bill in terms of knowing South African players, having previously coached Bafana Bafana. It always felt like he has unfinished business with the South African team, and has in the interim&nbsp;worked at some of the biggest football institutions world-wide, including Manchester United and Real Madrid. He's currently available, having last worked as the Colombia coach. The issue though could be how much the Portugal-born coach would cost. He may be a better option for the longer term.
