They could be heard chanting "Where is Messi" inside BC Place despite his absence giving their team a better chance of coming away with some points.

Miami head coach <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/lionel-messi-frustration-50000-fans-canada-vancouver-whitecaps-inter-miami-without-captain-luis-suarez-sergio-busquets/bltf6417bbb0f64eba4" target="_blank">Gerard Martino had always planned to rest Messi</a> alongside Sergio Busquets for the match and he defended his decision to leave them out before kick-off.He said: "We understand the people's frustration, especially in wanting to see these players, but it is our job as the coaching staff to make these decisions that are uncomfortable. We understand what these players provoke in the league and other markets, but we have to take these measures that are sometimes unpleasant for people. But they are beneficial for the players."

WHAT GERADO MARTINO SAID

The 36-year-old should be back in action at home against Atalanta United on 30 May. Fans attending matches in the hope of seeing the World Cup winner will need to do so in the next month before Messi departs to join up with <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-in/lists/argentina-copa-america-2024-squad-lionel-scaloni/blte5db9c11deaa7a82" target="_blank">Argentina ahead of the Copa America</a>.
