Krieger retired from professional soccer at the end of last season, having racked up a total of 25 appearances in her final year at NJ/NY Gotham FC in the National Women's Soccer League. WHAT HAPPENED?

The first ever edition of The Soccer Tournament (TST) took place last summer, with teams from across the world, including <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/wrexham-back-united-states-2024-tst-event-ryan-reynolds-rob-mcelhenney-men-s-women-s-teams/bltf9efa5bfac375cf8#cs52aadf9e35ce96a0" target="_self">Wrexham,</a> competing in the 7-a-side tournament for a cash prize of $1 million. It was announced last year that the 2024 edition of the tournament will also feature a women's division with the same prize for the winner, so Krieger and co. will have a real incentive to make it all the way.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Speaking to <a href="https://twitter.com/TST7v7/status/1776061458570178991" target="_self">ESPN</a> about the tournament, Krieger said: "I'm so excited! Heather O'Reilly is putting a team together of mostly former national team players... I don't know if I'm gonna be the only defender, I've only seen a lot of the attacking players so I think my job's gonna be cut out for me! But I'm so happy to enjoy myself for a few days. I told her I'm only signing up if we win, so no pressure!"

WHAT KRIEGER SAID

From what Krieger's interview suggested, TST pioneer Heather O'Reilly is putting together a very strong team for the women's edition of the competition this summer, packed full of illustrious former pros with experience in the world's best tournaments. <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/tst-is-back-the-soccer-tournament-launches-eight-team-women-s-tournament-usd1m-prize/blte5b249396a74566e#cs04bd54f3bb25f876" target="_self">Taking place in Cary, North Carolina</a>, the eight-team format will be a welcome addition to the season for many US soccer fans.
