The Catalan team have been dealing with financial issues for some time and have used various so-called 'levers' as quick fixes to allow them to bring in new players in recent transfer windows. The club have sold off various parts of the business to improve their situation slightly, and will once again have to get creative to raise €100 million (£85m/$108m) if they are to make new signings in the summer transfer window.

WHAT HAPPENED?

La Liga are demanding that the club balance their budget for the current season before they can spend any money on new players, according to <a href="https://theathletic.com/5232728/2024/01/31/barcelona-xavi-manager-laporta-finances/" target="_blank">The Athletic</a>. Barcelona claim that German company Libero Football Finance owe them €40m (£34m/$43m) over a deal made last summer and are said to be suing them over the fees. Plus, the €60m (£51m/$65m) from the sale of Barca Studios is supposed to be added to their salary budget. That means the club must raise around €100m either from those deals or through other means if they are to strengthen the squad further ahead of next season.

THE EXPLANATION

The reigning Spanish champions could help raise funds by selling their higher-earning players such as Robert Lewandowski and Frenkie de Jong by June 30 - the end of the Spanish tax year. However, that would only help get the 2023-24 season budget in order. If they do not get their affairs sorted soon, they could be forced to leave new signing Vitor Roque and Inigo Martinez out of their squad for next season due to salary limitations, with the former not registered for 2024-25 as yet.
