Diego Maradona died in 'agony' as forensic specialist blasts doctors for not noticing legend's heart was 'completely covered in fat and blood clots'

Carlos Cassinelli, the director of Forensic Medicine at the Scientific Police Superintendency, revealed details of the autopsy on November 25, 2020, the day Maradona passed away. Cassinelli claimed that the autopsy found that the Argentine's heart was covered in fat and blood clots, which indicated that the legend died in 'agony'.

During the homicide trial of seven health personnel - a neurosurgeon, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, doctors, and nurses - who attended Maradona, Cassinelli said: "The heart was completely covered in fat and blood clots, which indicate agony. This is a patient who had been collecting water over the days; that's not acute. This was something that was foreseeable. Any doctor examining a patient would find this."

ESPN further reports that several witnesses have claimed that they spotted Maradona's face was heavily swollen. The legendary Argentine footballer passed away at 60 more than four years ago from acute pulmonary edema secondary to congestive heart failure.

Currently on trial are Maradona's personal physician Leopoldo Luque, who treated the legend for the last four years before his death and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, who prescribed medicine the Argentina icon took. Nurse Gisela Madrid will be tried by a jury later in 2025.
