Manchester United's previous performances hinted at yet another humiliating derby defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, and that was what they got. This was not quite on the scale of the 6-1 thrashing in 2011 or last season's 6-3 hammering at the Etihad Stadium, but it was equally as disheartening.
United were outclassed by City in every department, especially attack, where they had no response. And Marcus Rashford had his latest torrid performance, creating hardly any danger and missing a clear opportunity in the second half with the goal gaping.
His strike partner, Rasmus Hojlund, was much more lively, but it was the Dane's foul which led to Erling Haaland giving City the lead from the penalty spot (after a somewhat harsh VAR intervention) and he failed to make the most of the few openings he had.
A bullet header from Haaland and a tap-in for Phil Foden completed a miserable afternoon for the Red Devils, and the gap between them and their local rivals has never been bigger.
