That did not end up being the case - England lined up fluidly but had Kieran Trippier at left-back, with Saka on the right wing - but Southgate has expressed his amazement at the leaks, as the Three Lions did often switch to a back five without possession.

WHAT HAPPENED?

We live in an amazing world where it’s so difficult for us because any element of surprise you might have with the opponent is gone three days before. It’s quite incredible really."

England play the Netherlands on Wednesday evening in the semi-final. A victory would set up a final against either France or Spain, who play each other on Tuesday evening.
