De Gea and Fernandes spent time together at Manchester United between the winter of 2020 and the summer of 2023. The two had become very good friends during their shared time at Old Trafford, and have even kept in touch with each other since the Spanish goalkeeper's departure from the club.

De Gea has now sent birthday wishes to Fernandes, who celebrates his 30th birthday while on duty with the Portuguese national team.
