Vertonghen limps out of Tottenham-West Brom clash

Jan Vertonghen had to be substituted as he picked up what appeared a nasty ankle injury in Tottenham's Premier League clash with West Brom.

The defender was replaced by Ben Davies shortly after the hour mark and looked visibly crestfallen on the touchline as he was attended to by Spurs medical staff.

The injury, which appeared to be to the Belgium international's ankle, seemingly happened as he was stretching to get to the ball in front of the managers' technical areas.

Vertonghen had only missed one Premier League game for Spurs in the 2016-17 campaign, with the former Ajax star suspended for the 4-1 win against Watford.

He could now be out for a significant period of time, however, with the 29-year-old having to helped down the tunnel as he limped away from the pitch during Saturday's game.

The centre-back has not had much luck with injuries in January, with Vertonghen having missed 12 weeks of the season after picking up a knee ligament problem during a meeting with Crystal Palace in 2016.
