We never thought it would end like that.
The 2006 FIFA World Cup final between Italy and France was the day we all said goodbye to one of the all-time greats - but nobody envisaged Zinedine Zidane’s farewell going quite like it did.
And this week FIFA are offering you the chance to relive it all with FIFA Rewind – a ground-breaking mobile and social series, which will bring a selection of the greatest games in World Cup history right up into the 21st century.
Fans have voted for the games they want to relive from 1982 to 2014 and this week we move on to 2006.
WORLD CUP | MATCH | DATE OF BROADCAST |
---|---|---|
2006 | Italy vs France | 11/05/2018 |
2010 | Uruguay vs Ghana | 18/05/2018 |
2014 | Brazil vs Germany | 25/05/2018 |
The contests will be given the same level of coverage you’d expect from a modern World Cup blockbuster, complete with pre and post-match analysis published via Goal and FIFA's social media channels throughout the week.
It was all set to be a classic. Zidane had been in sensational form, putting on a masterclass as France dispatched both Brazil and Spain.
Italy, meanwhile, had arrived at the tournament as outsiders after issues back home had rocked their domestic game to its very foundations.
