USMNT star Gio Reyna not needed by Dortmund as they defeat Chelsea in Champions League without in-form American

  • Reyna named to bench for Dortmund
  • Adeyemi, Brandt and Haller start in attack
  • Dortmund win 1-0

WHAT HAPPENED? Reyna was in the squad but not the line-up for Dortmund, with manager Edin Terzic turning to Karim Adeyemi, Julian Brandt and Sebastien Haller to lead the attack against the Blues. As the match wore on, Terzic called upon Anthony Modeste and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens to join the attack as Dortmund saw out a 1-0 lead thanks to a 63rd-minute goal from Adeyemi.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: The USMNT star has begun the second half of the season in fine form, scoring three goals off the bench while establishing himself as Dortmund's go-to super-sub. He started Dortmund's most recent Bundesliga match, a 2-0 win over Werder Bremen, but was relatively ineffective compared to his previous goalscoring performances.

The rest on Wednesday was not the worst thing for Reyna, who has been plagued by fitness issues throughout his time in the Bundesliga. He could very well feature in the second leg.
