<p>The incident in question took place in Hamburg ahead of Poland locking horns with the Netherlands. Supporters of both countries have been mingling with one another in bars and restaurants <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/euro-2024-fixtures-group-standings-knockout-bracket-final/blta5937308cc113cf7" target="_blank">heading into the Group D encounter</a>.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>An upbeat mood was soured once it became apparent that an individual brandishing a pickaxe was confronting fans, leading to local police having to take decisive action. <p>Hamburg Police have now shed light on what happened, saying in an official statement: “According to initial findings, a person threatened police officers with a pickaxe and an incendiary device. The police then used their firearms. The attacker was injured and is currently receiving medical treatment.”</p>

WHAT HAMBURG POLICE SAID

<p>The Reeperbahn in Hamburg, which is not far from the fan zone that has been set up to house fans in the city, has been closed. Thousands of Dutch supporters have been in that area, with the Oranje army <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/netherlands-euro-2024-squad-ronald-koeman/blt13e39a26df9a77fc" target="_blank">hoping to see their country get off to a winning start</a> at this summer’s European Championship.</p>
