Amakhosi have gone through a lot of coaches in the last five or six years: Giovanni Solinas, Steve Komphela, Ernst Middendorp, Gavin Hunt, Stuart Baxter and now Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard.Conversely, Sundowns have effectively had two coaches in charge, or at least two sets of coaches (Pitso Mosimane, followed by co-coaches Rhulani Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi , in the last decade.That has brought Masandawana consistency, stability, continuity and success. Amakhosi need to try and replicate what the Pretoria club has done in this respect.

1. Coaching stability

Chiefs are carrying too much deadwood. There are a bunch of players who have overstayed their welcome and are at the end of their careers and not able to perform at the optimum levels for such a big club. After years of failing to throw out the deadwood, it's time to be ruthless. There are also younger players who have failed to impress and one or two discipline issues. Now is the time for a clearout.

2. A spring-clean

Recruitment is an area where Chiefs have come up badly short. They've been accused by supporters of trying to do budget deals and even when they have spent big, not many signings have worked out. Improvements are needed in the scouting department, while a couple of big-name signings would help appease the fans.

3. Improved transfer strategy

Chiefs barely have any supporters showing up at the FNB Stadium these days, even after being starved of action for nearly two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. On social media, it's clear the Amakhosi fan-base is unhappy with many aspects of the club and there have even been protests. The Soweto giants are the best-supported club in South Africa, but the way things are at present, it's not helping them - if anything the fans' unhappiness is adding to the pressure.It's a hugely challenging task, but somehow the club needs to win back their supporters' hearts. Of course trophy success is one way to do that, but so too are all the various decisions made within the club. The fans must be put at the top of the priority list when Chiefs make any decisions.

4. Get the Joburg fans back on board

Developing one's own players is a great way to strengthen club culture and the ties between the team and the community. Amakhosi have actually done quite well in recent years to bring through some home-grown talents.Going forward they should pump more investment into their youth structures because there is no question of the talent being out there, and what youngster wouldn't want to play for Kaizer Chiefs? It's an area of potential Amakhosi should maximise.
