Who was Alan Shearer the footballer?
As a footballer, Shearer started his senior career at Southampton in 1988 after joining the youth squad two years prior. As well as playing at Blackburn Rovers from 1992 to 1996 and finishing his career at his boyhood club, Newcastle from 1996 to 2006.
During Shearer's full debut at the Dell, he scored a hat-trick, becoming the youngest player to do so in the top division. He also received his first England call-up to joining the Under-21 team in the Toulon Tournament, scoring seven goals in four games. While playing for the Saints, Shearer also received his first England first team call-up in 1992, scoring on his debut.
Getty ImagesIn 1992, Shearer broke the then English transfer-record after being signed by Blackburn for £3.6 million ($4.6m) and went on to help Blackburn win the Premier League in 1994-95. He then went on to break the record again when signing for Newcastle after Euro 1996 for what was a world-record £15m ($19.1m) fee.
A full England international, Shearer won 63 caps, captaining the squad 34 times and scoring 30 goals. He retired from Three Lions action after Euro 2000.
Following the announcement of his retirement as a player in 2006, Shearer was expected to take on a managerial role. Instead, he turned down an England coaching role down to focus on punditry. He did have a brief stint as interim manager at Newcastle towards the end of the 2008-09 season, which ended in their relegation.
What charity work does Alan Shearer do?
While playing for Newcastle, Shearer got involved with children's charity NSPCC by taking part with their Full Stop campaign in 1999. He has also done work for various charities both nationally and locally within the Tyneside area.
During his testimonial match he donated £1.64m ($2.09m) to various charities including £400,000 ($510,000) to NSPCC and £320,000 ($408,000) to the Alan Shearer centre, a respite care facility based in Newcastle.
The former England captain raised £300,000 ($383,000) to Sport Relief by doing a charity bike ride with ex-Match of the Day presenter Adrian Chiles. He's also taken part in a Soccer Aid match to raise funds for UNICEF.
