<p>Casemiro and Martinez have taken a step closer to returning to action after training with the first team on Wednesday. The two players are expected to be available for selection before the end of the month. WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>The imminent return of both players will be a huge boost to the club and manager Erik ten Hag. United are in the midst of a poor season, with their defeat to Nottingham Forest last time out leaving the Red Devils down in eighth place in the table and a distant 14 points off top spot. Ten Hag will hope that the return of the experienced duo can help turn around his team's form ahead of the second half of the campaign.</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>United have lost nine of their first 20 league games of the season for the first time since 1989-90; it's as many defeats as they suffered in the whole of the previous campaign.</p>

<p>Manchester United currently only have two games scheduled in January, against Wigan Athletic in the third-round of the FA Cup on January 8 and Tottenham in the Premier League on January 14.
