Hoddle illness confirmed as heart attack as treatment continues

Glenn Hoddle suffered a heart attack on Saturday, a spokesman for the former England manager has confirmed, as he continues to receive treatment.

The 61-year-old was rushed to hospital while working as a pundit for BT Sport, with the UK broadcaster cancelling their afternoon's football schedule as a result.

"Glenn remains in a serious condition in hospital after suffering a heart attack yesterday. He continues to respond well to treatment," a statement read.

"The family are grateful to everyone in the football family - and beyond - that have sent kind messages of support, they are very much appreciated.

"In particular, Glenn and his family would like to publicly thank the BT Sport staff that treated him immediately on set following his collapse.

"Glenn is now in the care of the professional NHS medical services, who have also been exemplary in helping him and the family during the last 24 hours.

"Doctors have advised the most important thing for Glenn is time to rest. Therefore, his family have reiterated the request for their privacy to be respected during this period."

A club hero at Tottenham, where he played for the majority of his celebrated career before later becoming manager in 2001, Hoddle was capped 53 times by England and scored eight international goals.

The stylish midfielder also represented Monaco under Arsene Wenger before operating as player/manager at Swindon Town and Chelsea.

Hoddle's work at Stamford Bridge saw him appointed as Terry Venables' successor with England and he led a Three Lions side featuring David Beckham and Michael Owen to the last 16 of the 1998 World Cup.

He also managed Southampton and Wolves, though following his departure from Molineux in 2006 he has not worked as a full-time manager, instead becoming a regular television pundit and co-commentator.

He worked at the 2018 World Cup as part of ITV Sport's team in Russia having acted as co-commentator for England internationals for a number of years previously, while he is also a regular on BT Sport's coverage of the Premier League, Champions League and Europa League.

Hoddle's heart attack came on a sad day for English football, with Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha feared dead after a horrendous helicopter crash after his side's 1-1 draw with West Ham. Furthermore, an elderley Brighton fan died after being taken ill before their game against Wolves.
