WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Promes has to remain in the UAE after being arrested for driving away from an accident during a Spartak training camp in the region. He was also arrested at the behest of the Netherlands as they seek to return him to Europe as part of a long-running legal case.</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>The UAE are yet to honour the extradition treaty that exists between their nation and the Dutch. It is now being claimed that Promes has signed a one-year contract with FC Dubai. He has previously won 50 international caps for the Netherlands, while also representing the likes of Ajax, Twente and Sevilla.</p>

DID YOU KNOW?

<p>Promes was <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/former-netherlands-star-quincy-promes-sentenced-six-years-in-jail-for-smuggling-more-than-1-350-kilos-of-cocaine/bltbb386594c098340c" target="_blank">convicted by a Dutch court in February of complicity in cocaine smuggling, leading to a six-year prison sentence being handed out</a>. He has also been <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/quincy-promes-jailed-18-months-stabbing-cousin-knee/bltebd51e939fbac0f9" target="_blank">convicted of stabbing his cousin in the knee during a fight in 2020 – which carries an 18-month term being bars</a> – but both convictions are being appealed.</p>
