Schweinsteiger sets new European appearance record at major international tournaments

Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger became the most-capped player at major European international tournaments after starting against France in the Euro 2016 semi-finals.

The veteran midfielder collected his landmark 38th cap in either a World Cup or European Championship game as he led his side out against hosts France at the Stade Velodrome on Thursday.

Schweinsteiger was doubtful for the game in Marseille with a knee injury, but managed to shrug off the complaint in time to help his side's push to join Portugal in the showpiece final.

The Manchester United man moved level with compatriot Miroslav Klose as he came off the bench to replace Sami Khedira against Italy in the quarter-finals for his 37th cap.

Germany legends Lothar Matthaus (36) and Philipp Lahm (34) rank inside the top five all-time highest appearance makers at major international tournaments alongside former Italy star Paolo Maldini (36).
