Man City to wear 125th anniversary shirt in Community Shield clash with Liverpool

Manchester City will wear a special kit to commemorate their 125th anniversary when they take on Liverpool in the Community Shield on Sunday.

The Premier League champions will face last season's runners-up and Champions League victors at the showpiece curtain-raiser at Wembley, in what is a milestone year for the club.

Though City initially formed as St. Mark's (West Gorton) in 1880, they took their current name in 1894, and to celebrate the occasion, will step out onto the field in a retro shirt devoid of sponsors and including features voted for by their fans.

Light blue with a white trim and “125 years” written under the badge in gold letters, the jersey also includes a copy of City’s founding document inside the neck, signed by one of the founders, Joshua Parlby.

Pep Guardiola's side will top off their ensemble with white shorts and socks when they meet Jurgen Klopp’s team to officially get the 2019-20 season underway.

"Manchester City has enjoyed tremendous success in recent years, but we also have a rich history that we are incredibly proud of,” chief operating officer Omar Berrada said.

"The Club’s 125th anniversary season will provide us with the opportunity to mark key moments in the life of Manchester City, and celebrate the fantastic journey that our Club and our fans have been on together.”

In their history, City have won six Premier League or First Division titles, with four of them alone coming since their 2011-12 triumph under Roberto Mancini.

They have also claimed both the FA Cup and EFL Cup on six occasions, along with the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1970, their lone continental success to date.

Despite their emergence as the dominant powerhouse of English football under Guardiola in recent years, they have so far been unable to translate that form into Champions League glory, with Liverpool instead proving themselves the greater team on the global stage following their triumph in June.

After Sunday’s clash with the Reds, City turn their attention to defending their domestic crown as they begin the Premier League campaign with a trip to West Ham on August 10.
