As Nigeria get set to take on Ghana in Friday’s 2022 Fifa World Cup play-off first-leg in Kumasi, GOAL examines how the Super Eagles have fared against the Black Stars in the competition in the past.

Nigeria vs Ghana showdown

This is the first time the two teams met in a World Cup qualifier – and it ended on a sour note for Nigeria as they were decimated in Accra.Incidentally, that game was the Super Eagles’ first attempt at qualifying for the global football showpiece after many years out in the cold.In the five-goal thriller handled by England’s Arthur Holland,&nbsp;the Black Stars triumphed thanks to goals from Edward Acquah, Edward Boateng, Aggrey Fynn and Mohamadu Salisu.Nigeria’s only goal was scored by Dejo Fayemi.

August 28, 1960: Ghana 4-1 Nigeria

Having suffered a humiliating defeat in the first leg First Round of qualifiers, Nigeria needed a comprehensive win to stand a chance of qualifying for the next round.This time, the battleground was the National Stadium, Lagos as Nigeria hosted the Ghanaians for the fifth time.With revenge on the mind of Jerry Beit Halevi's men, they put up a good showing yet were unable to secure victory as Edward Acquah's double cancelled out goals from Dejo Fayemi and Godwin Enamako.Ghana’s ambition of reaching Chile 1962 suffered a massive blow as they were knocked out by Morocco.

September 10, 1960: Nigeria 2-2 Ghana

For the first time in the history of Fifa World Cup qualifiers, Nigeria got the upper hand against Ghana. With the Super Eagles edging Cameroon 4-3 on aggregate, they were zoned against their archrivals en route to qualifying for Mexico 1970. ​Sabino Barinaga’s men cruised to victory thanks to goals from Muyiwa Oshode and Sebastian Broderick but the visitors pulled one goal back through Abekah Ankrah at the Liberty Stadium.

May 10, 1969: Nigeria 2-1 Ghana

Nigeria and Ghana met for the fourth time in the history of the Fifa World Cup qualifiers.After losing 2-1 to the Nigerians in the first leg, the Black Stars could only earn a draw in Accra.Amusa Gbadamosi put the Ghanaians ahead before Sam Garba-Okoye restored parity in the second half to help Nigeria progress 3-2 on aggregate.Sadly, the Super Eagles were denied a maiden World Cup appearance after failing to negotiate their way past Morocco and Sudan in the final round.

May 18, 1969: Ghana 1-1 Nigeria

In another failed attempt to qualify for the World Cup, Nigeria paired Ghana in the Second Round after breezing past Congo in the first leg.The Super Eagles had the privilege of hosting the first leg at the National Stadium but it did not turn out well.The visitors, were driven by Kwasi Owusu’s hat-trick, cancelling out goals from Nigeria's Kenneth Olayombo and Yakubu Mambo.Nevertheless, the match was abandoned in the 87th minute as fans protested poor officiating by Congolese referee Paul Nkounkou.Subsequently, Caf punished Nigeria for their action while awarding two points to the Black Stars.

February 10, 1973: Nigeria 2-3 Ghana (abandoned)

Despite being at a disadvantage, Nigeria mustered courage and travelled to Accra, aiming to turn the table around.However, the match ended on a no winner, no vanquished note in the Ghanaian capital city.

February 22, 1973: Ghana 0-0 Nigeria

En route to qualifying for the 2002 edition co-hosted by South Korea and Japan, Nigeria and Ghana were pooled in Group B of the final round that had Liberia, Sudan and Sierra Leone.The first leg staged at the Accra Sports Stadium ended 0-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

March 11, 2001: Ghana 0-0 Nigeria

Handled by the late Amodu Shaibu, Nigeria recorded an emphatic&nbsp;3-0 win in the reverse fixture.A first-half brace from Tijani Babangida plus a strike from Victor Agali at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt propelled Nigeria past the Ghanaians who finished fourth on the log.Consequently, the Super Eagles picked one of Africa's slot to the 2002 Fifa World Cup co-hosted by South Korea and Japan.

July 29, 2001: Nigeria 3-0 Ghana
